Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Japan is one of the favorite destinations for tourists because it has a diversity of culture, culinary delights and natural beauty that can pamper its visitors.
Good news for tourists from Indonesia. Now, Japan is one of the countries that can be visited without a visa with a number of terms and conditions that must be met. Thus, Indonesian passport holders no longer need to have difficulty processing visa applications.
For your information, a visa is a permit document issued by the destination country for someone who wants to enter a country. Currently, a number of countries provide visa-free access for Indonesian citizens (WNI). Apart from that, Indonesian passport holders can also obtain a visa-on-arrival or eTA (Electronic Travel Authority).
If you want to visit the Land of the Rising Sun, Indonesian citizens must have an electronic passport (e-passport) which was launched by the Ministry of Law and Human Rights in 2011. Reporting from the official website of the Directorate General of Immigration, Indonesian e-passports have a chip that stores biometric data. In this way, e-passport holders can pass through autogate at airports that provide this facility.
One of the advantages of using an Indonesian e-passport is visa-free entry to Japan through the Visa Waiver program. According to the Yogyakarta Immigration Office website, the Japanese Visa Waiver is a program that allows travelers to enter Sakura Country without applying for a visa.
“Indonesian citizens (WNI) are required to have an electronic passport in order to obtain this type of visa,” wrote the Yogyakarta Immigration Office, quoted on Tuesday (16/1/2024).
Quoting from the page of the Japanese Embassy in Indonesia, visa-free for Indonesian e-passport holders is valid for a maximum visit of 15 days
“If you plan to stay more than 15 days or aim to work in Japan, you must apply for a VISA by following the applicable regulations,” emphasized the Japanese Embassy in Indonesia.
“Indonesian citizens holding passports other than e-passports still need a visa to enter Japan,” the statement continued.
Based on the Visa Free policy with a Pre-departure Registration System for Indonesian e-passport holders, starting March 27 2023 online Pre-departure Registration and issuance of proof of electronic Visa Free Registration will be carried out through the Japan Visa Exemption System- JAVES).
1. Japanese Visa Exemption System (JAVES)
Pre-departure Visa Free Registration for e-passports can be applied for online and registered electronically. Applicants who use this system no longer need to visit the Japanese Representative Office or Visa Center (JVAC) and will get more convenience in applying for registration.
2. Methods and Procedures for Submitting Pre-Departure Registration using JAVES
Applicants are required to create an account on the JAVES website and follow the Pre-departure Registration application procedure. After all registration procedures are complete, the applicant will receive an email in the form of notification that registration has been completed and can display “Visa Exemption Registration Notice”.
Travelers who have completed E-passport Pre-departure Registration via JAVES are required to display the “Visa Exemption Registration Notification” on their gadget, not in the form of a screenshot or printout.
Meanwhile, applicants who do not use this system can apply for Pre-departure Visa Free Registration at the Japanese Representative Office in Indonesia (specifically Jakarta at JVAC) using paper media and get a sticker as evidence of Visa Free Registration in their e-passport.
