Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – One of the passengers on the Citilink plane, Febriansyah Putra, admitted that his AirWheel suitcase was prohibited from entering the plane's cabin even though it did not weigh more than seven kilograms.
In a video uploaded via his personal TikTok account (@febriansyahputra_24), Febriansyah admitted that this was the first time his robot suitcase was not allowed into cabin baggage, even though he had been using this sophisticated suitcase for about two years.
For your information, the AirWheel suitcase is a robotic suitcase that can be driven because it is powered by a Li-on battery. This suitcase, which is popular on social media, has a motor and hand grips so it can move while sitting on it.
“Now the AirWheel that I use can no longer go into the cabin, OK? Now it has to go in the trunk,” said Febriansyah, quoted Wednesday (17/1/2024).
“I don't know, yes, this regulation was just made at the beginning of this year. The thing is, last year I used this for more than a year or two years, there was no regulation requiring this AirWheel to go into the trunk,” he added while driving an AirWheel suitcase.
The video, which has been watched 353 thousand times, has attracted many comments from netizens. Most netizens say that AirWheel suitcases cannot fit into the plane cabin because they are powered by batteries.
Actually, what are the rules for storing AirWheels on airplanes?
1. Citilink
Quoting from the official Citilink page, there are two special provisions related to this smart luggage or an AirWheel suitcase. The first condition, AirWheel suitcases with Non-Removable Lithium Batteries (batteries cannot be removed) are not permitted into the cabin or checked baggage.
“smart luggage or AirWheel can be transported as cargo and must report at least four hours before departure,” wrote Citilink's statement.
For the record, each passenger is only permitted to bring one AirWheel suitcase and one spare battery.
Meanwhile, electronic devices with Removable Lithium Batteries are permitted to enter the cabin in accordance with applicable Portable Electronic Device (PED) and International Air Transport Association (IATA) regulations.
2. Garuda Indonesia
Quoting from the official Garuda Indonesia website, there are special conditions regarding use smart luggage or an AirWheel suitcase.
According to Garuda Indonesia smart luggage is a suitcase that has features and devices, such as chargers USB, Wi-Fi hotspot, GPS, system auto lockingand motorized wheels.
The airline confirmed that AirWheel suitcases with non-removable lithium-ion batteries could pose a fire hazard in the cargo hold or aircraft cabin. However, there are conditions if you want to bring AirWheel luggage.
“Smart Luggage with a non-removable battery with a battery capacity of not more than 0.3 g of lithium metal or not exceeding 2.7 Wh of lithium ion, permitted as checked baggage or cabin baggage and ensure Smart Luggage “It's already OFF,” wrote a statement from Garuda Indonesia.
“Smart luggage with a removable battery can be carried into the aircraft cabin as cabin baggage, the battery must remain installed and does not need to be removed from the inside Smart Luggage. 3. Lion Air Group (Lion Air, Super Air Jet, Wings Air, Batik Air)
On the official Lion Air Group website, there are no special provisions regarding use smart luggage or an AirWheel suitcase. However, the airline emphasized the rules regarding carrying battery chargers portable (power bank) and Lithium batteries.
According to Lion Air Group, all passengers are required to report if they are carrying electronic devices to prevent devices containing lithium batteries from being included as checked baggage.
On board the plane, passengers are prohibited from connecting power bank and lithium batteries with other electronic devices. Meanwhile, the maximum capacity permitted as cabin baggage is 100 Wh.
“Capacity 100-160 Wh must be approved by Lion Air Group to be transported. Capacity more than 160 Wh is prohibited from being carried on aircraft,” wrote Lion Air Group rules.
4. Water Lamp
Similar to Lion Air Group, Pelita Air also has no special provisions regarding use smart luggage or AirWheel suitcase and only confirms the carrying rules power bank and Lithium batteries.
According to Pelita Air, power bank must be carried in cabin baggage, not airplane baggage. Meanwhile, power bank permitted on board no more than 20,000 mAh or 100 Wh.
“Power banks “with a capacity exceeding 32,000 mAh or 160 Wh is not permitted,” stressed Pelita Air.
