Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – ByteDance, which is TikTok's parent, announced that Douyin CEO Zhang Nan resigned from his position this week.
Douyin is known as TikTok's sister service specifically for people in China. Because of this, Douyin is often nicknamed 'Chinese TikTok'.
Zhang, whose English name is 'Kelly', announced his resignation via his personal WeChat account. ByteDance has also confirmed this.
Next, Zhang will join the Jianying team, a video editing application that is both managed by ByteDance. However, he did not reveal his position in Jianying.
He only said that he would help develop product development in Jianying to face the era of artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
If Douyin is China's TikTok, then Jianying is China's CapCut. According to research firm DataAi last September, CapCut was the second application made by ByteDance whose consumer spending reached US$ 100 million or the equivalent of Rp. 1.5 trillion.
CapCut also has a user base of 490 million people.
Zhang has worked at ByteDance for 10 years. He was one of the core leaders who helped develop Douyin to become the leading short video platform and become one of the largest applications in China.
He reports directly to ByteDance CEO Liang Rubo in his position as Head of Douyin Group. Zhang was named by Forbes as one of the most powerful women in 2020.
Apart from Douyin, Zhang also oversees ByteDance's Toutiau news aggregator app. Before joining ByteDance, Zhang was the founder of the popular photo sharing application Tubo, before it was finally acquired by ByteDance in 2014.
