Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Thanks to his mother, this man is the 21st richest person in the world with assets of IDR 1,000 trillion. He is the giant technology conglomerate, Jensen Huang.

Huang's wealth reportedly continues to skyrocket. Forbes (2024) noted that he is the 21st richest person in the world with total wealth of US$ 70.4 billion or IDR 1,100 trillion, from previously being 37th in the world.

This is inseparable from the great work of Nvidia, a semicoductor manufacturing company, which it started in 1993. Nowadays, Nvidia plays an important role in the development of various modern technologies, such as chip suppliers in the artificial intelligence sector, metaverse and autonomous cars.

This achievement was not easy and was a long journey for Jensen Huang. Interestingly, not many people know about Huang's life story that can be studied, especially about his parents and simplicity.

Success Thanks to Mother

Huang was born in Taiwan in 1963. However, due to the unfavorable situation in Southeast Asia in the 1970s, when he was 9 years old, his family invited him to move to the United States.

When in the US, Huang still had minimal knowledge of English. Luckily, he has a mother who wants to teach him English from day to day.

“Mother taught English to prepare us (red, Huang and her brother), even though mother wasn't very good at it either. Every day she gave me 10 words in English, to learn the meaning and pronunciation,” said Huang to CNBC International, quoted Saturday (9 /3/2024).

Thanks to this method, Huang was able to communicate fluently, even though it didn't mean he was free from bullying from friends. To the New Yorker, Huang said that at that time he was the target of bullying because he came from Asia, was of Chinese descent, and was not fluent in English.

Even so, he continued to live his days and was able to develop his interest in the world of technology. While in the US he was recorded as having studied at Oregon State University majoring in electrical engineering.

After graduating, he immediately worked at the Advanced Micro Devices company, for many years. It was only later that he founded the Nvidia chip company in 1993 and became the success it is today.

At this point of success, Huang expressed his infinite gratitude to his parents.

“I am the product of both parents' dreams and aspirations,” Huang said.

Likes street food

Despite his success, Huang remains humble. He did not like showing off his wealth and was repeatedly caught eating on street vendors on the side of the road.

In December 2023, Huang was known to have visited a street food restaurant in Hanoi, Vietnam. Quoting Yahoo News, he came wearing casual clothes in a black t-shirt and jeans. When he arrived there, he then enjoyed local food which some people considered disgusting, namely snails and egg coffee drinks.

Interestingly, the visit to the street vendor was carried out on Huang's own initiative. He refused to have dinner at a luxury hotel that the group had previously booked.

“He ignored luxury dinner parties at high-end hotels and restaurants. Huang chose street food with different flavors,” said Hoang Anh Tuan, a diplomat who accompanied Jensen while visiting Vietnam.

Of course, this habit is an anomaly because the majority of people like Huang are no longer like that.
