Batam, CNBC Indonesia – PT Telkom Indonesia Tbk. targeting the construction of data centers with a total capacity of 500MW in Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Thailand by 2030.
Telkom Group Business Development Director Honesti Basyir explained that this ambition is not only carried out organically, but Telkom will also collaborate with other players to make investments or joint investments in building data centers.
“Our target by 2030 is to build 500MW total capacity, and of course this will not be done organically, only with Telkom, but done inorganically,” said Honesti on the sidelines of a press conference, Thursday (13/6/2024).
However, Honesti admitted that before Telkom expanded to other countries, the company was still continuing to develop the potential that existed in Indonesia itself.
According to him, Indonesia itself still has quite large potential, with its large population and high internet penetration. In fact, Honesti said that 40% of the digital economy in Southeast Asia is in Indonesia.
“We also see that it is impossible for us to do everything in Indonesia, there are several digital economies that are growing in the region, and we see that opportunity, so we are not alone, so we need partners to be able to do that,” said Honesti.
It is known that Telkom currently manages several data centers with a total capacity of 42MW. As for the end of 2024, Telkom has a target to add 18MW.
Currently, Telkom is also building a hyperscale data center based on artificial intelligence (AI) in the Batam Special Economic Zone, Riau Islands. The project, which is targeted for completion in the third quarter of 2025, has a capacity of 50MW.
