Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Apple has just introduced its artificial intelligence (AI) system 'Apple Intelligence' at WWDC 2024. The Cupertino giant also announced a collaboration with OpenAI, the company behind the popular ChatGPT service.
For such deals with other technology companies, OpenAI could receive payments of up to billions of US dollars. However, this does not apply to Apple.
A report by Bloomberg technology expert, Mark Gurman, said that Apple did not pay a penny for AI collaboration with OpenAI.
“Apple is not paying OpenAI for its partnership,” Gurman said.
Furthermore, he said Apple paid OpenAI with 'exposure'. Exactly the tactics that influencers usually use to get free services, for example plane tickets or luxury hotels.
“Apple believes that the OpenAI brand and technology that reaches hundreds of millions of device users is comparable or even more profitable for OpenAI than paying with money,” said Gurman, quoted from Extremetech, Friday (14/6/2024).
For information, there are more than 1 billion iPhone users worldwide. That much market reach could indeed be said to be profitable for OpenAI.
Apple itself is the most valuable company in the world with a market capitalization of US$ 3.29 trillion or the equivalent of IDR 54,000 trillion.
However, on the other hand, Apple has been greatly helped by OpenAI technology, especially in improving the capabilities of the smart assistant Siri, which has often been complained about.
By comparison, Microsoft paid OpenAI US$ 10 billion last year for the integration of ChatGPT in its Azure service, the software giant's own computing platform.
