Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Police in the city of Kent, England, used artificial intelligence to draw sketches of home burglaries. The appearance of the perpetrator's face in the picture made netizens excited.
According to Futurism, perpetrator crime in the spotlight is a man who broke into the home of a 90-year-old senior citizen in Tunbridge Wells. During the investigation, the police managed to obtain a description of the perpetrator from several statements from witnesses and victims.
Based on police information, the witness saw the perpetrator upstairs when he came home at 5 pm. When raided, the person claimed he was a police officer.
The suspect is described as a white man, 165 cm tall with black hair and one of his front teeth missing.
This description was then used to create a recreation of the suspect's face. However, this time the police in Kent did not use the services of a sketch artist. They use computers.
The image of the computer “creation” was then published by the police on social media X, which was previously known as Twitter.
Unfortunately, instead of providing information about the suspect, netizens instead made fun of the sketch.
The reason is that the computer-generated images are similar to old school game characters.
“Did he rob the bowling alley at [Nintendo] Wii?” said one netizen on X.
“He is hiding in a level in Golden Eye,” said another netizen, making a reference to the James Bond game title from the 90s.
According to Futurism, Using AI to draw a person's face based on a description has risks. Like humans, computers with AI technology also have biases depending on the resources supplied to train them.
Police are now also starting to use DNA phenotyping technology to create photos of suspects, although geneticists say this technique is pseudoscience or unscientific.
Below are some netizen comments regarding the AI-generated sketch released by the police in Kent.
