Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Minister of Communication and Information, Budi Arie, revealed that Telegram is the most uncooperative platform in eradicating online gambling which is currently being promoted by the government.
“I am warning the Telegram platform that if it is not cooperative, I will close it,” he stressed in a press conference, Friday (24/5/2024).
Budi Arie sees a trend of online gambling using the Telegram platform to facilitate this activity. Meanwhile, Google has so far committed to handling online gambling.
The Minister of Communication and Information stressed that he would fine digital platform organizers IDR 500 million if they continue to allow online gambling content to spread on digital platforms.
“If you are not cooperative in eradicating online gambling on your platform, then I will impose a fine of up to IDR 500 million per content. I repeat, I will fine up to IDR 500 million per content,” stressed Budi Arie.
According to Minister Budi Arie, this step was taken in accordance with the regulations in force in Indonesia, namely Law no. 11 of 2008 concerning Information and Electronic Transactions as well as provisions for amendments and Regulation of the Minister of Communication and Information Number 5 of 2020 concerning Private Electronic System Operators and provisions for amendments.
“Fines on digital platforms are imposed in accordance with Government Regulation Number 43 of 2023 concerning Types and Tariffs for Non-Tax State Revenue (PNBP) which applies to the Ministry of Communication and Information,” he said.
Meanwhile, for Internet service providers (ISPs) who are caught serving online gambling, Budi Arie emphasized that his party will withdraw the company's license. Not only that, Kominfo will also announce the ISP companies that violate them.
