Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Arifin Tasrif revealed that there were discoveries of jumbo gas reserves in the Andaman sea, off the coast of Aceh, including in the Andaman II and South Andaman Blocks.
Arifin said that the discovery of natural gas in the area was a “giant discovery”. The details, namely in the Timpan-1 Block Andaman II well operated by Premier Oil, are around 5.5 trillion cubic feet (TCF).
Meanwhile, the Layaran-1 exploration well in the South Andaman Block by an energy company from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Mubadala Energy has the potential to reach 6 trillion cubic feet (TCF) of gas-in-place.
“So the previous Andaman had implications of approximately 5.5 TCF without condensate. Then the last Andaman (South Andaman) was 6 TCF. But we will still do more drilling,” he said at the 2023 ESDM Sector Achievement and Program Press Conference Work in 2024 in Jakarta, Monday (15/01/2024).
Arifin explained that the exploration to production period in a gas field usually takes approximately 6 years. He also hopes that gas from the two Andaman working areas can be produced in 2030.
“We don't want to go past 2030, so that we can use national energy security. Second, we can increase foreign exchange,” he said.
Apart from that, to support gas production in Andaman, Arifin proposed building a new LNG plant. The reason is that the existing LNG facilities in Arun are no longer optimal in processing natural gas from the gas field.
“It looks like we have to install a new one, it's really old. It's from the 70s. We have to install Gen Z LNG,” he said.
