Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Having difficulty defecating or constipation can trigger discomfort in the stomach. This can also cause health complications if not resolved.
Apart from consuming high fiber fruits, there are several drinks that are effective in treating constipation. Apart from water to help you stay hydrated, dietitian Lauren Manaker says that coffee and just plums are one of the best drinks to choose to treat constipation.
Launch Eat This Not Thatthere are several main reasons why drinking coffee in the morning and plum juice can facilitate bowel movements.
1. Coffee
First, drinking coffee interacts with your digestive system. According to Manaker, coffee can stimulate the digestive tract, which increases peristalsis or the movement of your intestines to push the contents out.
In other words, drinking coffee makes the muscles of the colon contract, which usually causes a bowel movement.
In addition to stimulating your digestive tract, coffee's natural acidity can increase stomach acid production, which in turn aids digestion.
Caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee also contain acids that increase a certain hormone called gastrin which can increase muscle contractions that cause you to have a bowel movement.
Manaker says that for many people, just drinking warm water in the morning can stimulate bowel movements. However, it should be noted that people's reactions to coffee can vary, with some being more sensitive to its effects than others.
2. Plum juice
If you're not a coffee drinker, plum juice can also be a great alternative. A study shows that plum juice contains large amounts of phenolic compounds such as neochlorogenic and chlorogenic acids.
These ingredients are natural laxatives and can improve intestinal function. This can ultimately increase the frequency of defecation.
“Plum juice is often touted as a natural remedy for constipation because of its dietary fiber and sorbitol,” says Manaker.
Sorbitol, a natural sugar alcohol found in plums, works as a laxative by drawing water into the intestines, softening stool and making it easier to pass.
