Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) hopes that recipients of the Education Fund Management Institution (LPDP) endowment scholarship can increase fivefold in the future.
Jokowi knows that the number of LPDP scholarship recipients has increased sevenfold since it was first opened. However, he believes this increase is still not enough. He acknowledged that this increase requires a large budget, but this is the government's obligation to encourage education in the country.
“I think it needs to be increased at least 5 times from what it is now, it requires a large budget, but it is our obligation to find a way so that our ratio can be raised,” explained Jokowi, when opening the XXIX Convention and XXV Annual Meeting of the Indonesian Chancellors Forum in Surabaya, Monday (15/1/2024).
Jokowi revealed that over 15 years, namely 2009-2024, the LPDP budget has reached IDR 6,400 trillion. In fact, when it opened LPDP only had capital of IDR 1 trillion. Meanwhile, in 2023, LPDP funds that have been distributed will reach IDR 139 trillion.
LPDP is a scholarship program funded by the government and given specifically to those who wish to continue their education to master's (S2) or doctoral (S3) level. In 2024, the total scholarship quota provided by LPDP will reach around 10,000 recipients. Quoted from LPDP, the scholarship program opened this year includes general, affirmative, targeted and double/joint degree scholarships.
