“Disruptions on campus have created a threatening environment for many of our Jewish students and faculty and noisy disturbances have disrupted teaching, learning, and preparation for final exams,” the university said in a statement. Reuters, quoted Wednesday (1/5/2024).
This announcement was made when students took over a building at Columbia University on Tuesday morning. They closed the entrance and raised Palestinian flags outside the windows.
Video footage shows protesters on Columbia's Manhattan campus holding hands in front of one of the university's legendary buildings, Hamilton Hall. They brought furniture and metal barricades into the building.
They were also seen hanging around outside the barricaded doors, clapping their hands. Chants such as “A united people will never be defeated” and “Free Palestine!” also shouted.
A post on the protest organizers' Instagram page called on the public to protect the encampment and join them at Hamilton Hall. In X's post, the protesters said they planned to remain in the hall until the university agreed to three demands namely divestment, financial transparency and amnesty.
“An autonomous group reclaimed Hind's Hall, previously known as 'Hamilton Hall', in honor of Hind Rajab, a martyr murdered at the hands of the Israeli state at the age of six,” wrote the account of the protestors' organization, CU Apartheid Divest (CUAD), quoted by the Associated Press (AP).
White House spokesman John Kirby on Tuesday condemned this form of student protest as not peaceful. He called the occupation of campus buildings “the wrong approach.”

1,000 People Arrested

At Harvard, protesters set up a camp with 14 tents last Wednesday. This came after protests against the suspension of the Harvard Undergraduate Palestine Solidarity Committee at the university.
As a result, Harvard locked most of the gates in Harvard Yard. The campus also limits access for those who do not have a clear student identity.
