Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Welcoming 2024, Facebook is launching a new feature that will attract controversy regarding the security of user privacy. Named 'Link History', this feature will save all the links that users visit via the Facebook application.
Users can disable Link History settings. However, by default, the feature setting is enabled.
The Gizmodo report said Facebook seemed to 'force' users to use Link History. The stored data is used to distribute personalized advertisements, aka targeted ads.
Facebook says Link History is useful to make it easier for users to see browsing activity in the application.
“With this new setting, you will never lose a link again,” Facebook said in a pop-up notification distributed to users.
“When you allow Link History, we will use that information to improve the advertising experience across Meta technology,” said Facebook, quoted Thursday, (4/1/2024).
Facebook promises to delete data in Link History within 90 days, if users choose to disable the feature. According to Facebook's help page, Link History is currently only being rolled out in a few countries.
The global release will be carried out in stages.
On the positive side, Facebook is now more open about data harvesting via Link History, which is something that should be appreciated. At least user data is not taken secretly without consent.
Users can also choose whether they are willing to have their data taken or not.
