Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Elon Musk has stirred up trouble again by attacking Jeff Bezos' ex-wife, MacKenzie Scott. Musk criticized the ex-wife of the Amazon creator.
However, that didn't stop Scott from donating his wealth to charity. On Tuesday (19/2) Scott announced that he would donate US$640 million to 361 organizations.
The donation is more than double the initial $250 million he pledged to give last year.
Lever for Change, the organization that helps Scott organize his philanthropic giving, said 279 nonprofit organizations each received $2 million, while 82 other organizations received $1 million each.
The organization said registration was initially planned for 250 organizations with a value of US$ 1 million each. However, considering the performance of these organizations, as assessed by the panelists, the team decided to expand the pool of recipients and donation amounts.
Scott's big donation comes weeks after Musk criticized his charity work.
“Ex-wives of super-rich people who hate their ex-partners should be included in the list of 'Reasons for the Death of Western Civilization,'” Musk said in a now-deleted X post on March 6, quoted from Business Insider, Thursday 921/3/2024).
Musk did not explain why he said that to Scott, but Musk strongly criticized the way Scott views the company's diversity, equality and inclusion.
“DEI (diversity, equity, inclusion) is just another word for racism,” Musk said in an X post in January.
It wasn't the first time Musk lambasted Scott for donating billions of dollars to charity. In May 2022, Musk claimed that his company was being sidelined by the Democratic Party because Scott had donated to a PAC (political action committee) disguised as a charity.
Instigated repeatedly, Scott has had no public reaction to Musk's comments about how he manages his money.
Scott's donations this year also include support for the health of women and minority groups. She's donated to the ACLU of Alabama, the Center for Refugee and Immigrant Empowerment, and the Institute for Women's & Ethnic Studies, to name a few.
