Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – iPhone sales have plummeted due to the rise of Huawei in China, which is the largest cellphone market in the world. Most recently, data from research firm Counterpoint revealed that Huawei's HarmonyOS operating system has surpassed Apple's iOS operating system.
HarmonyOS market share in China reached 17% in the first quarter (Q1) 2024 from the previous 8% in the same period in 2023, quoted from Gizmochina, Friday (14/6/2024).
At the same time, the iOS market share fell to 16% in Q1 2024 from 20% last year.
The Android operating system is still king with a market share of 68%. This is not surprising, because there are many cellphone manufacturers that depend on Google's operating system.
Huawei cellphones themselves previously ran on the Android operating system. However, since Huawei was blacklisted by the US government, the giant can no longer use Android.
As a result, Huawei developed HarmonyOS independently. It has been proven that Chinese companies have not shied away from the repeated ambush efforts made by the US government.
The decline of iOS and the significant growth of HarmonyOS is new history in the cellphone industry. This is the first time since 2019 that iOS has experienced a decline in market share in Q1.
The Counterpoint report highlights that the increase in HarmonyOS market share was supported by the rise of Huawei by launching a 5G cellphone at the end of 2023. Huawei goes head-to-head with Apple in China to capture the premium market.
HarmonyOS' growth is not only limited to China. In the global market, HarmonyOS' market share doubled year-on-year to 4%.
Meanwhile, the global Android market share experienced a slight decline from 78% to 77%. iOS market share also fell from 20% to 19%.
