Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Pressure on TikTok in the United States (US) is getting stronger from parliament. This popular social media service was asked to be completely separated from its parent from China, ByteDance.
This is because the US is worried that TikTok threatens national security because it shares user data in the US with the Xi Jinping government.
ByteDance asked to divest TikTok. Most recently, Republican Senate Leader Mitch McConnal asked for binding regulations for ByteDance to sell TikTok shares.
Currently, the application is actively used by more than 170 million US citizens, quoted from Reuters, Wednesday (10/4/2024).
“Requiring the divestment of Beijing-influenced entities from TikTok would break with existing constitutional precedent,” McConnell said.
“This will eliminate a major threat to America's children,” he continued.
The House of Representatives previously agreed by voting 352-65 on March 13 to give ByteDance 6 months to divest TikTok. Otherwise, TikTok is threatened with being blocked.
Commerce Committee Chair Maria Cantwell said she would hold a meeting with Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and Intelligence Committee Chair Mark Warner to formulate rules for processing ByteDance's divestment to TikTok.
The fate of TikTok is a big issue in Washington. Many policy makers have received protests from users. They asked that the threat of blocking TikTok be removed.
“Blocking TikTok violates the rights of 170 million US citizens,” said a TikTok representative.
