Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The number of patients undergoing hospitalization due to contracting Covid-19 in Singapore has increased in the last two weeks. This is in line with the emergence of a new wave dominated by the KP.1 and KP.2 variants.
Quoting from an official statement, the Singapore Ministry of Health (MOH) revealed that the average daily hospitalization due to the new wave of Covid-19 cases increased to around 250 from 171 in the previous week.
Meanwhile, the average daily cases in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) are claimed to be still relatively low, namely three cases. In the previous week, the average daily case in Singapore hospital ICUs was two patients.
According to MOH, KP.1 and KP.2 are the two variants that dominate two-thirds of Covid-19 cases in the Lion Country. However, the ministry led by Ong Ye Kung emphasized that this variant has no indication that it is more easily transmitted or causes more severe disease compared to the previous variant.
In detail, MOH estimates that Covid-19 cases in Singapore in the week 5-11 May 2024 will increase to 25,900 people. In the previous week, the number of case reports received by MOH was 13,700 people.
Reporting from The Strait Times, Ye Kung predicts that Covid-19 cases in his country will continue to increase. He estimates that this latest wave will only reach its peak in the next two to four weeks or around the middle and end of June.
“We are at the beginning of the wave [Covid-19]. “This wave continues to increase,” said Ye Kung, quoted Wednesday (22/5/2024).
“So, I think this wave will peak in the next two to four weeks, which means between mid and late June,” he continued.
In addition, Ye Kung asked people at high risk, such as people with comorbidities, aged over 60 years, medically vulnerable, and at risk of serious illness to receive an additional dose of the Covid-19 vaccine if they have not done so in the last 12 months.
For your information, up to now no special or new symptoms have been found that are closely related to the FLiRT variant of Covid-19. However, the incubation period for this variant is said to be similar to JN.1 and the previous Omicron variant, namely five days or more before symptoms appear.
“Much stronger human immunity due to vaccination and infection can reduce the severity of symptoms due to the FLiRT variant of Covid-19,” wrote the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health report.
According to the CDC citing USA Today, the FLiRT variant of Covid-19 has symptoms similar to JN.1, namely:
1. Fever or chills
2. Cough
3. Sore throat
4. Blocked or runny nose
5. Headache
6. Shortness of breath
7. Fatigue
8. Loss of sense of taste and smell
9. The body feels less conscious
10. Gastrointestinal symptoms (stomach pain, mild diarrhea, and vomiting)
