Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Android's dominance as the king of operating systems in the world is difficult to shift. So far, Apple's iOS operating system has never been able to beat Android, because its product portfolio is limited to iPhones only.
It seems that Apple also has to be careful that its second position is being taken away by HarmonyOS, Huawei's operating system which has grown rapidly in recent years.
Huawei began to rise in 2022 after releasing the Mate 60 series. This device became Huawei's first 5G cellphone after receiving harsh sanctions from the US.
The increase in Huawei cellphone sales is directly proportional to the increasingly massive adoption of HarmonyOS. According to the South China Morning Post report, HarmonyOS will give Android and iOS a shake-up in China.
In fact, it is predicted that HarmonyOS will soon overtake iOS in second place, quoted from PhoneArena, Thursday (4/1/2024).
HarmonyOS was developed by Huawei after it was blacklisted by the US in 2019. As a result, Huawei cannot partner with US companies, including Google, which is the creator of Android.
A year later, the US again punished Huawei by blocking exports of advanced chip technology to the manufacturer. Since then, Huawei has not received chips to develop devices with a 5G network.
The launch of Huawei Mate 60 Pro sent the industry into an uproar. The US also accused Huawei of violating trade sanctions. Although, it was finally revealed that Huawei was indeed developing a 5G chip independently with the help of SMIC.
Thanks to the success of the Mate 60 in China, Huawei then took firm steps by releasing a further version of HarmonyOS Next. Different from before, HarmonyOS Next is completely independent of Android and will not support Android applications at all.
HarmonyOS Next is predicted to be released in a preview version in the first quarter of 2024. Huawei is said to have discussed with several large Chinese companies to develop native applications for HarmonyOS Next.
These include Alibaba's Alipay payment system, e-commerce company JD, video gaming NetEase, and food ordering service Meituan. In fact, some have recruited several developers since November 2023 to develop native applications for HarmonyOS.
Currently, more than 700 million devices are using HarmonyOS. More than 2.2 million third-party developers have developed applications for the platform.
Huawei itself is busy preparing its next flagship, namely the P70 series. According to rumors, the cellphone will be launched in the first quarter of 2024.
