Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – One of the concerns regarding the development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology is the potential for large numbers of unemployed. Because, some human jobs can be replaced by this advanced technology.
However, many experts predict that AI will create many new jobs in the future. One of them is related to soft skills, because they cannot be replaced by robots.
Generative AI has gained popularity since the emergence of ChatGPT at the end of 2022. The service created by OpenAI has triggered other technology giants to develop similar technology.
Generative AI itself has been widely adopted in various daily applications. Apart from that, it turns out that there are already several companies that are replacing the role of humans with AI robots. The following is summarized by CNBC Indonesia, Wednesday (7/2/2024), from TechCo:
MSN
SMS portal MSN decided to replace human workers with AI, even before the technology boom because of ChatGPT. In 2020, MSN cut several employee positions responsible for writing news on the company's website.
MSN uses AI software to write content. According to the media company that supplies journalists to write content on MSN, PA Media, the decision followed the financial difficulties experienced by MSN at that time.
At the beginning of this year, Google announced two waves of layoffs and it is predicted that this will continue. CEO Sundar Pichai explicitly said there are some jobs that can already be replaced with AI.
Most of those affected are workers in the advertising division. Google is also spreading the use of AI in the customer care division and advertising sales processes to increase operational efficiency.
Dukaan
The Bengaluru-based e-commerce company replaced 90% of its customer support workers with internally developed chatbots. The company claims chatbots help companies cut costs and reduce waiting times for customers.
Ikea
In June 2023, Ikea said it had used an AI bot named 'Billie' to answer calls in the call center. However, Ikea did not lay off human workers in the call center.
The company allocates call center employees to the interior design advisory division.
BlueFocus
This marketing agency from China is ending contracts with content writers and designers because it wants to fully employ AI. BlueFocus has Microsoft's Azure OpenAI license. Then, they also partnered with Baidu's AI bot named Ernie to build a full marketing service system.
SalesForce
This software company from the US fired 700 employees or 1% of its total human resources. This number is an addition to the previous layoffs and affected 10% of employees.
Like Google, Salesforce has not publicly announced plans to replace humans with AI. However, SalesForce's recruitment budget has been cut drastically at the same time as it is investing more and more in AI.
This has led to speculation that SalesForce has replaced the role of humans with AI.
Duolingo
Last January, Duolingo announced layoffs affecting 10% of its contract workers. This is because foreign language learning companies have switched to AI for content translation.
Apart from the 7 companies that have been and are rumored to be replacing human workers with AI, there are several other companies that are also reported to be starting to follow similar steps. Two of them are IBM and BT.
